briefing at the 57th session of the Human Rights Council 9 September 2024 – 11 Octobe
Association ma’onah for Human Rights and immigration .
We welcome the report of the Working Group on Enforced Disappearances and Arbitrary Detention.
This confirms the disturbing trend of using enforced disappearances as a tool to disrupt humanitarian operations, silence civil society and undermine the democratic process.
However, we would like to draw the attention of the Working Group to the situation of enforced disappearances in Yemen. Since the Houthis took power, enforced disappearances have been systematically used as a weapon of repression. They have abducted civilians, journalists and human rights defenders and detained them in detention centers without due process.
The Houthis also arbitrarily detain UN staff and local civil society organizations, often resulting in enforced disappearances.
The Houthi group is known to subject detainees to inhumane conditions and torture. But how many Yemenis are living in the same situation and no one knows about them among the many violations of international law committed by these militias?
Thank you.
